Ergonomics is defined as the use of scientific information to create an environment that promotes healthy body mechanics. Ergonomics can be applied to every aspect of life. The use of ergonomics promotes a healthier and more efficient lifestyle. Working at a desk presents many risks of injury, though it would seem to be fairly benign. Not using proper ergonomic can result in many musculoskeletal disorders such as tendinitis, de Quervain's, ganglion cysts, bursitis, and the most well known, carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as many other conditions. It is very important to have an ergonomic workstation to prevent these injuries as well as make you a more efficient employee. The picture to the left shows the proper setup for your workstation.
A proper working position is one in which your body is properly aligned so that your joints are in a neutral position, not flexed or extended. OSHA website gives these guidelines for proper alignment.
Using these guidelines can help prevent injuries; however, other factors must also be considered. You should take frequent breaks and try to avoid staying in the same position for an extended period of time. You should also take time to stretch your muscles and try to alternate your tasks so that you are not performing repetitive motions.
Injuries such as those listed above will cause you to miss time from work, have trouble sleeping, and be unable to participate in your usual recreational activities as well as the general day-to-day activities. Not only that, but they can sometimes lead to time consuming and costly treatments that can be avoided by simply following the guidelines above and leading an otherwise healthy lifestyle. Exercise is one very important factor as well as a stretching program that can further improve your chances of avoiding injuries in the workplace. By taking care of yourself in general and using the proper ergonomics, you can lead a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life at work and at home.
