Johnson City has a good reason to celebrate May as national Small Business Month--the state's top small business owner is in our own back yard.

Elisa Comer, founder and CEO of Eagle's Landing Transcription Service, recently was named Tennessee's Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. State officials caught on quickly to Comer's success; she's been here only 15 months, but Comer insists the admiration is mutual.

I've said that if someone wants to start a business in Tennessee, they should be required to own a business in other states so they know how good they've got it," she said.

ELTS Recognized by Local Paper for 2006 Blue Ribbon Award

Two of Johnson City's small businesses — Jane's Lunch Box and Eagle's Landing Transcription Service — were recently honored for their outstanding quality and performance with Blue Ribbon Small Business Awards from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

"It's really just shining a flashlight on outstanding small businesses," said Brent Inscoe, director of small business marketing communications for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

With the ever-increasing demand to "have it all"--to perform at work and to still make time for family and self--executives and businesspeople are finding themselves caught in a balancing act. In a technology-driven workplace, those devices designed to make life and work easier can both help and hinder the effort.

The wide availability of broadband Internet access, wireless technology, PDAs, smart phones and laptops allow employees to telework from virtually anywhere. On the plus side, this means that businesspeople who may have chosen to stay home or have been forced to leave the work force—such as new parents, those caring for an ailing relative or even people relocating to another location from their current job—can work remotely. It also means that there is even less of a separation between work and home life. Those executives and others already working long hours now find themselves available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, thanks to technology.

SBA Helps Eagle's Landing Take Off

Elisa Comer founded Eagle's Landing Transcription Services with less than $20,000 in capital. A certified medical language and transcription specialist, Comer saw the need for qualified medical transcription personnel and launched ELTS to provide this specialized training and then offer services to physicians. The company became a tenant in the East Tennessee State University Innovation Laboratory, a med-tech business incubator.

Eagle's Landing soars into partnership with Walters State Community College in Morristown, TN! Beginning in January of 2006, students in the Walters State medical transcription program are able to complete their required internship with the Eagle's Landing Department of Education and Training. The first distance-based internship for Walters State, the program is geared to duplicate a real at-home transcription setting so that students have an exact picture of what at-home transcription is all about.

Elisa Comer, Tennessee Small Business Person of the Year for 2005, typifies the theme of this year's Economic Summit, "Partnering for Economic Progress," which will be held Thursday at the Centre at Millennium Park.

"We started this company with a $12,000 retirement policy and a passion for patient care and stay-at-home moms," said Comer, founder and CEO of Eagle's Landing Transcription Service based in Johnson City.

"People here put small business first. They don't just give lip service" like she found in some other communities, she said.

Eagle's Landing Partners with Roane State Community College

The Training Team at Eagle's Landing begins a new partnership with Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge, Tennessee! Beginning in the fall of 2005, students in the medical transcription program at Roane State are eligible to complete their internships with Eagle's Landing. The internship counts for college credit and is a way Eagle's Landing steps up to the plate with regard to transcription education and training. Roane State is the fourth college to enter into this education partnership with ELTS, and this is the first distance-education internship for Roane State.

In 1990, after ten years in direct patient care and in pursuit of a nursing degree on a company scholarship, Elisa Comer discontinued her studies and left her place on her employer's medical staff due to a severe latex allergy. Her employer let her transfer to an administrative position where she learned the administrative side of operating a medical business. In 1996, she obtained a diploma in Medical Language and Transcription Studies.

About the same time, a church friend approached Comer and her husband about taking over a small transcription service. After much research, she decided to take over an account of the existing service, and she started Eagle's Landing Transcription Service (ELTS).

Eagle's Landing CEO Represents Tennessee at National Small Business Week in Washington, DC

Someone said necessity is the mother of invention, and one small business owner claims that starting her own company was necessary in order for her to work out of her home and spend more time with family. After less than six years in business and only one year in Johnson City, the U.S. Small Business Administration has named Elisa Comer, founder and CEO of Eagles Landing Transcription Service (ELTS), the Tennessee Small Business Person of the Year for 2005.

In 1999 Comer was in nursing school in Georgia, had started a family and wanted something she could do out of her home. She had several years of transcription experience and decided to start her own company. In February 2004, when the family moved to this area, Comer opened her business in the East Tennessee State University Innovation Lab at 2109 West Market Street, Johnson City, Tennessee.

The core of ELTS business is still transcription, says Comer, but additional services include software development, network design, Web site design/ support and medical transcription classes. She says, "By embracing technology, we offer jobs to employees who have the option of working from home, who have the drive to meet high quality standards and see themselves as part of the patient care team.
